SUMMARY:Southern Fire Exchange Webinar: Plan\, Predict\, & Burn - The New Prescribed Burn Planner (PBP v2)
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Dr. Holly Nowell and Karen Cummins\, Tall Timbers Research Station \nPrescribed fire is one of the most effective tools land managers and landowners have for maintaining fire-dependent ecosystems\, improving habitat\, and reducing hazardous fuel buildup that increases wildfire risk. Yet\, coordinating multiple burns while waiting for the right weather conditions can be challenging. The Prescribed Burn Planner (PBP) was originally developed to help users plan and prioritize prescribed burns by providing weather forecasts for individual burn units\, thus hopefully reducing the number of missed burn windows. \nAfter receiving funding support from USDA Forest Service\, Southern Region (R8)\, PBP version 2 was created to take prescribed burn planning to the next level. Join Karen Cummins and Dr. Holly Nowell from Tall Timbers as they demonstrate PBP v2’s new capabilities. \nWebinar Recording: If you can’t make the webinar\, look for the recording to be posted on the Southern Fire Exchange YouTube Webinar Archive. Questions? Contactus@southernfireexchange.org \nSociety of American Foresters CFE Credit Expected.

SUMMARY:Prescribed Fire Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is designed to give landowners and managers a basic understanding of the use and application of prescribed fire to manage habitat for wildlife and forage for livestock. \nWildlife and livestock benefit from prescribed fire as it stimulates new plant growth and enhances wildlife habitat. Game and nongame wildlife require healthy\, diverse plant communities for both food and cover. Prescribed fire also reduces woody plant encroachment and is beneficial for many native plant species in a way mechanical and chemical management treatments cannot duplicate. \nThe workshop is free for participants and topics include: \n\nLocal Prescribed Fire Resources\nThe Role of Fire in Plant Management\nGrazing to Burn and Burning to Graze\nFire Weather\nSmoke Management\nFire Line Preparation\nFire Suppression Equipment\nPlanning the Burn\nPrescribed Burn Associations\nFire demonstration (weather permitting)\n\nThe M.O. Neasloney Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located approximately 2 miles north of Belmont\, between Luling and Belmont\, in Gonzales County. \nPlease RSVP by emailing Robert Conrad the names of attendees by April 1. Lunch to be provided.

SUMMARY:Fire Lab Seminar Series: ClassiFiRxe: a data-driven tool to support prescribed fire planning and implemenetation
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Benjamin Sweeney\, Data Scientist\, US Forest Service \nMatt Jolly\, Research Ecologist\, Forest Service \nDespite a growing need to expand the pace and scale of prescribed burning to address the national fire deficit\, there is a lack of data-driven methods to incorporate fire danger information into prescribed fire planning. To address this gap\, we combined nearly two decades of prescribed fire and wildfire records with spatial fire danger data across Montana and Idaho to characterize when and where each fire type has occurred. We identified objective thresholds from a normalized fire danger index\, the Energy Release Component (ERC)\, by treating pile burns\, broadcast burns\, and wildfires as ordinal classes along an ERC continuum. We generated distributions of optimal thresholds to create “overlap zones” that quantify uncertainty between fire types. These methods were used to build a simple planning guide\, ClassiFiRxe\, that can help reveal fire class seasonality\, estimate prescribed burn windows at local scales\, and map categories across large landscapes. ClassiFiRxe can be developed wherever sufficient fire weather and occurrence data exist. This data-driven framework provides a repeatable\, interpretable and robust tool to support prescribed fire planning\, helping restore fire to landscapes and reduce the fire deficit.
